At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
