Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
