Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
