A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
